September marks a magical period in Cocconato d’Asti; an ancient month awakens in the rolling hills of Monferrato, bringing with it an intoxicating historical atmosphere. This September, the city again welcomes the privilege of Frederick Barbarossa who changed the history of Cocconato. A unique event that unites the great characters of history and the common people, the Monferrato and the Holy Roman Empire.
An eye to the past: the inauguration
On September 10, the city reveals the secrets of its medieval past through the exhibition of the Palio’s drapes, a piece of great historical importance, followed by a rich afternoon conference that outlines the unknown history of Cocconato. The privilege of Federico Barbarossa, a precious parchment dating back to the mid 1100’s, becomes the protagonist of the celebration.
The conference on Barbarossa: a light on history
The main event inaugurates the medieval September in Cocconato with a conference entitled “Lights, shadows, intrigues about the origins of the feud of the counts Radicati”. During this historical discussion, distinguished academics such as Aldo A. Settia, professor of medieval history at the University of Pavia, Giancarlo Andenna, professor emeritus of the Catholic University of Milan and the archaeologist Davide Casagrande, will be present to elucidate the history and characteristics of the privilege granted by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to Count Ottone I Radicati.
Recovered by Mario Averone, a citizen of Cocconato passionate about history, the parchment of Frederick I Barbarossa will be temporarily exposed in the City until 10 October.
The document will be available free of charge during the conference. Afterwards, it can be admired by the public who will flock to observe this historical parchment, put on display as part of a special exhibition held inside the council room of the City.
Homage to the past in historical costume
To frame the conference, a group of representatives of the seven Borghi Cocconatesi, dressed in historical costumes, will pay tribute to the importance of the event, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a fascinating medieval atmosphere, so dear to the City of Cocconato.
The drapes of the palio: a historical symbol
On 10 September, in front of the Town Hall, the drapes of the Palio will be unveiled, the work of the talented artist Maria Chiara Tortia. These drapes, carried in procession to the parish church for blessing, will then be assigned on September 24 to the village winner of the 54th race.
Medieval September in Cocconato d’Asti is an experience deeply rooted in history, combining historical events, personality and an engaging atmosphere. An event not to be missed for all those who appreciate Italian history and culture.
