With its 81 stages, the Basilian Way offers a unique journey through the beauty of Calabria and Basilicata. Although the Cammino has traditionally been traveled on foot, more and more mountain bikers are discovering the excitement of exploring these ancient trails on two wheels. However, it is essential to approach this adventure with respect for the environment and awareness of the challenges that nature can present.
Mountain bike accessible sections and responsible choices
Out of 81 total stages, as many as 57 are rideable by MBT, with 53 stretches located in the beautiful Calabrian territory and 4 in the picturesque Lucanian landscape; while the appeal of riding these trails on two wheels is undeniable, it is essential to understand that these are not conventional cycle paths but fragile historical earthen artifacts suitable for the passage of men and herds on foot. Trails and mule tracks require careful and environmentally friendly riding; in particular, electric bikes add a new dimension to hiking, allowing anyone to tackle trails that would otherwise require more intense training. The number of “hiking” bikers is growing steadily, but many of them may not be adequately prepared to meet the challenges of the mountains.

Prudence, respect for nature and common sense
The Basilian Way’s official website and app provide clear directions on which sections are bikeable. However, it is necessary to act with caution, respect for nature and common sense. Personal safety and preservation of the natural heritage are priorities that every hiker should consider, this is not only to avoid unnecessary risks but also to preserve the beauty of the trail; if the stretches on paved or unpaved roads can be traveled with e-bikes without damaging them the same cannot be said for the paths and mule tracks. Let us remember that the ecosystem deserves respect and that our behavior can affect its preservation.
The critical issues with electric bikes
Although e-bikes offer an affordable way to tackle challenging trails, they bring with them some critical issues: the ease with which a summit can be reached should not obscure the fact that the descent can be just as challenging and more dangerous; in addition, many cyclists, attracted by the ease offered by e-bikes, may not have the experience or skill to tackle steep or dangerous terrain. In addition, the traction of e-bikes can cause damage to trails, especially when they are subjected to a large number of particularly fast passes. This results in more frequent maintenance, which is almost never feasible and could alter the original trail. It is essential to acquire knowledge about the rules of cyclo-hiking before embarking on the journey, and newbies should always remember that tackling a route with a new vehicle, even if seemingly easy and similar to one already used, is something to be acquired gradually, possibly together with those more experienced than us.
A sustainable and conscious adventure
Exploring the Basilian Way by bicycle can be an amazing and adventurous experience as well as a unique opportunity to connect with nature, history, and local culture. However, it is essential to do so with a sustainable approach, environmental awareness, and respect for other walkers. Through slow tourism, we can fully enjoy the magnificence of this millennial trail while preserving its value for future generations.
