Elcito is a small village perched on a rocky spur at 821 m. of altitude on the slopes of Mount San Vicino. This is what remains of an ancient castle erected in defense of the Benedictine abbey of Valfucina. We inhabit seven people, now all elderly people who have decided to stay where they were born, despite the relative isolation. To Elcito there has never been a convenience store or a store, even for the necessities because until the 1970s was a self-sufficient community. There were two hundred people and had an intense relationship with their land, primary source of livelihood.
Elcito is reached from San Severino Marche along the road to Apiro until the hamlet of Castel San Pietro where you take the road, about 5 km, which leads to the country. Counted among the localities more features and interesting of the municipality of San Severino Marche, unlike family marchigiani settlements placed on gentle hilly slopes, rises on a rock high and steep site on the slopes of Monte San Vicino.
The particular Elcito name derives from elce, otherwise known as Ilex (Quercus ilex). Although the ilex grove is typical of the Mediterranean maquis, was post-glacial had colonized even areas more internal, and it is probable that there could be residues in the rocky gorge below the village, with its particular microclimate. Definitely deserves to penetrate through the streets of the village and in the beech wood of Canfaito.
