The White Locorotondo is the most beautiful balcony of the Murgia dei Trulli. The characteristic sharp roofs made of gray "chiancarelle" stone, called cummerse, exalt the facades of houses that inside have environments from the typical star vaults. From its belvedere, you can admire a territory that is a thrilling sections: a mosaic of small vineyards marked by dry stone walls, spots of the Mediterranean forests and silvery olive groves which surround the old farms, thousands of trulli scattered in the districts. In addition, the small ancient nucleus of Locorotondo, enclosed in its circular perfection of stones and calcine, a time marked by walls, seems suspended between dream and reality: the white lime wraps everything, ago by dazzling background of baroque architecture of local stone, exalts the intense color of flowered balconies. The heart of the historic center is piazza Vittorio Emanuele, a living room created by surrounding architectures, where you also find the Pro Loco, a valuable point of reference for tourists and the organizers of events and the IAT.
Crossing Porta Napoli is accessed in the cozy and elegant nineteenth century square. A time was called piazza castello as skirted the ancient castle which stood presumably where it is currently located the church of Our Lady of Sorrows. Even if the castle no longer exists in reality in this piazza can be seen on the right as soon as you cross the columns of Porta Napoli, an ancient building predisposed to the defense of the small village. Always on the side wake rises an imposing palazzotto, in nineteenth century style, which in the upper part has a painted frame with a delicate pink. On the other side of the square stands the great Aprile-Ximenes Palace, Nineteenth Century, completely painted with a hue very illuminated of the typical pompeian red. Between the two palaces is implanted a historic house in court with the typical roofs to cummerse. This home in court is closed by an ancient masonry structure in calcareous stone with an ogival arch whose ashlars are sculpted with reasons late-medieval. With every probability these ashlars are materials of reuse that perhaps belonged to the ancient Porta Napoli that was demolished and rebuilt in the XIX century. The decorative pattern of these ashlars is very varied, ranging from two winged dragoncelli placed at the ends of the arc to the effect at canestrato, scales or racemates proposed all along the curve of the portal. In the upper part was inserted a edicoletta with the statue of the Madonna. The square hosts the artisan shops and recreation and on floor stands out the coat of arms of the mosaic city. To see the Mother Church dedicated to San Giorgio the Martyr, the Church of San Nicola (with dome trullo and nave to cummersa), the Church of Our Lady of the Greek. To explore the countryside and the green lung in contrada Caramia, where a forest equipped with exercise stations attracts athletes and lovers of nature. In contrada San Marco of merit is the ancient church and the nearby Trullo di Marziolla.
Locorotondo is famous for its 130 contrade about, for its white wine Locorotondo DOC and for new productions of wines resulting from autochthonous vines, as well as for the "Gnumerèdde suffuchète", roulades of tripe lamb, linked with the guts of the animal and boiled for a long time in terra cotta pans.
Evocative demonstrations that take place there. From the Locus Festival, annual appointment with good music whose notes travel between the sharp roofs and cone of the local stone that unwinds from the second half of July to the first half of August, at Viva Festival (second half of August) with avant-garde music, to the authentic flavors of the feasts of the contrada that accompany for the entire summer residents and visitors in several agglomerations scattered in the countryside, offering everyone the chance to savor the tastes and live the proverbial hospitality of this land. The comedies in vernacular and the different initiatives of local associations: from theater, to rock, dance, up to the food and wine of festivals and tastings of good wine. Unfailing the sagra pyrotechnics of 16 August that illumines the entire Valle d'Itria in honor of the Patron San Rocco.
