The village of Montone rises in the High Valley of the Tevere, in Umbria. Of medieval origin, was in the X century, the feud of the marquis of glues and subsequently of the Del Monte. Already in 1121 the fortified village, albeit under the direct control of Perugia, had the possibility of dedicating themselves to the statutes and administer public affairs through their own magistrates. The presence of the Fortebracci family in the locality is documented since the XIII century. This family belonged to the famous condottiere Andrea, perhaps the greatest mercenary captain of his time. He, better known as the arm, created in the early decades of the fifteenth century a strong state in central Italy between today's regions of Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo, one of the most daring attempts to create an independent state by the power of the Papal State. On 28 August 1414 Montone is elevated to the county by John XXIII, considered antipope, and Arm it received the investiture, for him and for his descendants. Ten years after, Martino V, pope recognized by all as legitimate, repeats the investiture in favor of Charles, the son of arm which died in 1424 in the battle of L'Aquila. In 1473 Carlo Fortebracci family, following in the footsteps of the Father, fights at the service of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and manages to evict the Turks at sea, receiving the gift, for such service, a plug of the crown of Christ. Carlo sends at Montone the precious relic and decreed the feast of the plug on the Monday of the Angel. Passed to calves at the beginning of the XVI century, Montone was annexd to the state of the Church toward the middle of the Sixteenth Century.

The village presents itself as an intricate of narrow, winding streets with stairways and a succession of overlapping architectures, rampant arches, dark alleys and fresh that open onto small squares and gardens, artisan shops and huts perched on the ancient city walls.

In 2010 was awarded the honorary citizenship of mutton with the british actor and filmmaker Terry Gilliam.
