Pietrapertosa, the ancient Pietraperciata seems to have arisen in the VIII century b.c. by the Pelasgi.
The Pelasgi remained until the arrival of the Greeks, that from the coast is pushed toward the inside to bring their goods and their manufactured articles.
Gave a new form to the village: the sistemarono to amphitheater at the foot of the rocks, well sheltered from three sides, widening the defensive system created by the Pelasgi.
At the time of the invasions of Hannibal, Pietrapertosa came the Romans, drove out the Greeks and did the country their Curtis and their Oppidum. Built bridges and roads and left the remembrance of their language that we find in the dialect pietrapertosano, words and phrases in Latin, even if volgarizzate, as scola, pupa, longa, crai, pscrai.
With the fall of Rome began the barbarian invasions to Pietrapertosa. Were the Goths and the Longobards, were the Byzantines with Lucas who remained masters of this territory for more than twenty years.
Then came another people, that Norman with which Pietrapertosa has a period of power and splendour.
The Normanno-Svevo castle, dominating from the top of the rocks the country and le Contrade, preserves the memory of one of their Queen: the great constancy of Altavilla, mother of Federico II. Being the country well fortified and protected is passed to the construction of the first public buildings and civilians. The accounts moved in the town and at the walls we had to build their palaces, of which still today you can admire the marvelous portals, just along the track of the portals.
On the slopes of the Castle develops the nucleus of the first formation of the inhabited center current, of medieval formation, that keeps, still today the ancient Saracen name of Rabata. Its name dates back to the ancient Arab rulers, which guided by King Bomar, here you annidarono in 838 and made it their fortress.
Warriors, nomads and Saracens, built, their rozze dwellings, similar to true and own fortresses. Arranged in rows from the top downwards, adapt to the profile of the terrain, so much so that, very often, and leaned against the rock, the use as a wall. Had a rectangular shape, with only two openings formed in the shorter sides: the entrance door low and narrow and the other opening that entered in the hostel, from where you could escape in case of danger.
Had neither camino nor window but a hole in the roof acted as a chimney and skylight the so-called "cirnale". The stone walls were without plaster and coverage in stone slabs. They were always placed on a high stairs of access.
Worth a visit the Mother Church of San Giacomo, the Convent of San Francesco and the Castle.
