Vernazza

Part of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, Vernazza represents a treasure trove enshrined in the heart of the famous Cinque Terre National Park. Strategically located between Monterosso al Mare and Riomaggiore, with the picturesque village of Corniglia as its hamlet, Vernazza enchants with its natural and architectural wonders.

Vernazza's charm lies in the perfection of its historic architecture, highlighted by rich loggias, mighty tower-houses, intimate arcades, and fascinating churches. Within the village, streets wind through the historic buildings, a succession of steep stairways called "harpaie," leading through the single central street.

Among its most intriguing architectural features is the "castrum," a set of 11th-century medieval fortifications consisting of a striking castle and a cylindrical tower. The earliest documentary traces of Vernazza date back to 1080, when the 'castrum Vernatio' served as the maritime base of the Obertenghi, noble lords of Vernazza of the 11th and 12th centuries. During that period, they established the first trade exchanges, fighting bravely against the assaults of Saracen pirates.

Over the centuries, Vernazza has maintained a vital commercial and strategic role on the Ligurian Sea. Along with the increase in trade and the strengthening of the navy, in 1209 Vernazza swore allegiance to the Republic of Genoa, becoming one of its key coastal bases for commercial, political, and territorial expansion in the Ligurian Levant.

A visit to Vernazza would not be complete without a stop at the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia, an exquisite example of the Romanesque-Genovese style. Built in the 13th century, the church is a fascinating mix of medieval and Renaissance elements. Equally fascinating is the Castello dei Doria, a medieval fortress that rises about seventy meters, giving a breathtaking view of the village and the coast.

Vernazza is a magical place that attracts visitors from all over the world with its deep history, authentic charm, and enchanting coastal landscape. We invite you to discover the wonders of this village by having a unique experience on the Cinque Terre trails.
