Veroli

Veroli, founded from the first millennium B.C., is a fascinating town located in the province of Frosinone. Its origins can be traced to the people of the Ernici, a division of the vast Sabine population. Playing a crucial role in the Lega Ernica along with Alatri, Anagni and Ferentino, Veroli allied with Rome, fighting against the Equi and Volsci peoples.

The town is famous for being Christianized by St. Salome, a biblical figure who was the mother of the apostles James and John, whose relics are still preserved at the church that bears her name and also houses the Holy Staircase, a pilgrimage site known to be the third of its kind in the world.

History records the passage of St. Benedict to Veroli in 529 AD, coinciding with the founding of the church of St. Erasmus. In the 8th century, Veroli became an important seat of the 'Patrimonium Sancti Petri,' thus becoming a crossroads for popes and emperors.

Veroli became famous for the Abbey of Casamari, founded in 1035 by four local clergymen. In the 12th century, the abbey became a significant center for the Cistercian Order, one of the most powerful in all of Europe.

In the heart of this historic city, one of the earliest forms of municipal government in southern Italy originated in 1134. Today, Veroli is thriving thanks to its diverse craft activities, including copper, iron, ceramics and textile work. There are also numerous cultural and religious institutions.
