Hidden on the premises of the Cloister of St. Francis in Alatri and discovered by chance in 1996, the fresco of “Christ in the Labyrinth” represents a unicum of remarkable artistic and spiritual interest. The combination of the figure of Christ “Pantocrator” and the archaic symbol of the labyrinth offers an intriguing key to the Christian faith.
The labyrinth è unicursal, that is, it has a single entrance way that coincides with the exit. &Eegrave; consists of twelve black circles bordering white corridors, recalling a path of reflection and introspection. In the center of the fresco, the bearded Christ with a halo, wrapped in a golden robe, holds the book of Holy Scripture in his left hand.
With his right hand, in a blessing act, he indicates the path of entry and exit from the labyrinth, a metaphor for a spiritual journey in which quest and faith are intertwined.
Visit the Cloister of St. Francis in Alatri and admire the fresco of Christ in the Labyrinth, a journey through art, symbolism and spirituality that will lead you to discover the richness of Lazio’s religious tradition.
