The Church of Santa Croce is one of the oldest buildings in the village of Artena and is placed to dominate the surrounding landscape, in the highest area of the Lepini Mountains. Its construction dates back to 1100 and is in Baroque style with two square tower bell towers attached, crowned by an octagonal pavilion: they stand on either side of the facade, forming a single architectural body with the church.
The church was built at the behest of Prince Giovan Battista Borghese to the design of architect Domenico Terzago by master mason Franco Buratti. It has two sacristies: one that was to serve for the parish priest and the other for the archpriest of the Chapter of Santa Maria. Both having two doors to be able to access either the church or the choir.
