Saint Michael Archangel Cave

Saint Michael Archangel cave is a natural karstic feature, with a length of 52 metres. It is located underneath the sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo, in the province of Foggia, Apulia.

The façade of the cave is made of grey rocks, the entrance has a wrought iron gate of 1932 and a wooden door of 1898. Inside the cave, the floor is composed of rectangular stone blocks: on the surface, you can admire stalagmites and signs of the hands and feet of the worshippers.

On the left, you will find the sacristy: there, on the altar, San Michael’s face has been painted with the technique of low relief.

The high altar is located at the end of the cave: there, a glass showcase with four marble columns contains a copy of the statue of Saint Michael Archangel (the original one is in the sanctuary above).

Thanks to the discovery of various archaeological finds at the entrance or in the nearby areas of the cave, it has been possible to acknowledge that this place was inhabited since the middle and upper Palaeolithic.
