Keyhole Cave

The Keyhole Cave is a deep and high cavern located along the Cilento coast and originated as a result of a major fault in the coastal limestone ridge. Its privileged position right on the beach of Lentiscelle and its characteristically shaped opening gave it the evocative name of Serratura.

This fascinating cavity has witnessed human presence for millennia and still preserves some portions of an important archaeological deposit, unfortunately eroded by the sea over time during the stages of its uplift and its entrance into the cave. Inside, about 50 meters from the entrance, the deposit is better preserved, offering valuable clues about the lives of the human groups that frequented the cave.

Indeed, the Keyhole Cave was inhabited by Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Middle and Recent Neolithic communities, making it a site of great historical and archaeological interest to scholars seeking to reconstruct the life dynamics and customs of these ancient peoples.

A visit to the Keyhole Cave represents a unique and fascinating experience for all those who wish to delve into the mysteries of the past and discover the traces left by man in this spectacular natural setting, among the wonders of the Cilento coastal landscape.
