Church of San Donato

The church of San Donato, founded as ancient Cona, i.e. little country church of fratete, rises to castles, just outside the village of Abruzzo, on a slight hill. The building was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary in the XV century and it was enlarged at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century, up to take the current form.

The ceiling is entirely made of hollow tiles decorated with majolica, size 20×40 cm, in about 1000 (currently 800) specimens dating back to 1615-1617 approximately. Opera is unique in its genre, is partly exposed to the Ceramics Museum of castles that preserves the hollow tiles broken or damaged. The embodiment is attributed to the ceramists of family Pompeii, in particular to Horace Pompeii, even if the decoration of the church was a work that involved all decorators of the country. The rehabilitation and restoration was made by the ancient furnaces Giorgi, around 1972. The themes depicted on the tiles are various: the heraldic symbols, animals apotropaic, religious writings and ways to say, floral decorations, geometric designs simple.
