Set in the quiet charm of Castelpetroso, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene è a small historical gem. Built in 1745, the chapel is located along the ancient road that led from Castelpetroso to Isernia, positioning it at the center of centuries of history and travel.
Despite its small size, the chapel exhibits an unmistakable character. Its ribbed facade and exposed stone walls give it a rustic sobriety. Inside, the’austerityà of poor art contrasts beautifully with a fine canvas created by Molisian painter Raffaele Gioia in the 1700s.
The outdoor area è equally fascinating, with a square paved with stone slabs of various origins, surrounded by ancient oaks. Just beyond the chapel, a botanical garden houses a variety of shrubs, grasses and trees, including olive trees symbolizing universal brotherhood and peace. A lawn adjacent to the chapel pays tribute to local emigrants, with two large olive trees planted in gratitude.
The Magdalene Chapel è was restored in the 1990s thanks to the contribution of the Guasto community. The driveway leading to the chapel houses old farming tools, adding a touch of rural charm. A monument dedicated to St. Pio of Pietrelcina stands nearby, further enriching the sense of sacredness and peace that pervades the entire area.
