The Clavesana Castle of Cervo arises as fortified church dedicated to Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, on the highest hill of the village. Only subsequently, around the XIII century, the Clavesana marquises, lords of the territory, made it their castle-palace marchesale incorporating in the construction an antecedent tower in Romanesque style.
In its history was converted to the most different uses: besides oratory, the underlying local entertained the Hospital wanted by the Knights of Rhodes which was dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate. Today the rooms on the first floor are the seat of the ethnographic museum of western Liguria, as well as the seat of the local tourist information office, while the upper floor is dedicated to art exhibitions during the summer period. The building was built entirely in stone with rectangular plan and completed with the four towers at the corners of the structure.
