Also known as Castello Ruffo di Calabria, this fascinating fortification stands on a promontory at the mouth of the Strait of Messina, in a dominant position both towards the coast and towards the city and is one of the most characteristic and typical elements of the landscape.
The castle, with an irregular plan, has parts dating back to different eras but which still today maintain the fairly homogeneous configuration of a fortress with curtains, towers and loopholes. To access the fortress it is necessary to cross a bridge. The main room is characterized by a stone portal built with a pointed arch, on which stand out the noble coat of arms of the Ruffos and the plaque that celebrates the restoration of the castle carried out in the 16th century.
Considering its dominant position on the Strait of Messina, in 1913 a lighthouse was built to provide a reference to the ships that crossed the strait. The lighthouse of Scilla, a small white tower with a black base, is still active and is managed by the Navy.
