The Church of Purgatory, built in 1700, is located at the center of the main square of Casamassima, in Puglia, Piazza Aldo Moro. In the baroque style, the equal of the imposing bell tower, hosts the Confraternity of purgatory and the statue of the Madonna del Carmine, the patron saint of the city. According to the legend, the same Madonna del Carmine, in the guise of a peasant, 5 April 1799 became find sitting on the round stone, a large monolith still visible on the outskirts of Casamassima, to indicate to the French came to the ports of the country for saccheggiarlo a wrong way to enter in the center. Rescued so Casamassima and since then, in the month of July is celebrated a great feast in honor of the Madonna del Carmine during which the mayor of Casamassima, as a sign of respect and gratitude for this gesture, he gives symbolically the keys of the city.
