The ruins of a castle is situated on a hill dominating the entrance to the valley between Mount Pirchiriano and Caprasio, a short distance from the Dora Riparia and by the torrent sexes, between Caprie and Condove. The news oldest not already of the building but a local defensive system would seem to be linked to the clash between Charlemagne, King of the Franks, and desire, King of the Lombards, which took place between the 771 and the 774 to the closed: probably also the hill of Castellazzo was fitted with the defensive structures forming part of the so-called “clusae langobardorum” on whose magnitude anyhow scholars are not always agree.
In reality it is only by starting from the XIII century that the Castrum Capriarum appears explicitly mentioned in a notarial certifies concerning the territories where the Counts of Savoy were exercising the rights of Baronia. In that period it was the center of one of the castellanie abbaziali di San Giusto di Susa and was also the seat of the court and prison. For this reason, usually harbored a small number of soldiers.
The castle is usually closed to the public but openings are scheduled throughout the year.
Summer openings of “castrum Capriarum” 3-6 p.m. Sunday, June 4, Sunday, July 2, and Sunday, August 6, 2023 on Archaeology Days.
