Fornovolasco

Fornovolasco is a small town in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli with less than a hundred inhabitants, but with a truly unique history and beauty. In the past, the main activity of the village was iron mining and processing, which characterized this place for several centuries before being discontinued. The medieval origin of these practices is demonstrated by interesting documents found in the archives of S. Martino di Lucca that narrate how iron mining and smelting practices were already developed in the 16th century.

In fact, the etymology of the name “Fornovolasco” could be attributed, although there is no certainty about it, to a certain Count Volasco of Brescia, who would be the first to arrive near the village to start an iron mining business. The village lies in the heart of the Apuan Alps at the base of the Pania della croce and is divided into three sectors by the waters of the Petrosciana stream.

Dating back to the 10th century, this small village is known both for the splendid Grotta del Vento and for the main trails leading to the best-known peaks of the Apuan Alps, Pania and Monte Forato.

Fornovolasco is also home to two adventure parks that allow both children and adults to hike, climb safely and canyoneer.

During the summer period, Fornovolasco, offers many outdoor activities, given the presence, precisely, of the two different parks: The Battiferro Park and the Levigliese Adventure Park, highly recommended for those who want to spend a hot summer day of cool and fun immersed in the nature of this beautiful village. But in addition to physical activity, it is also possible to enjoy local products.

Fornovolasco, in fact, is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its gastronomic specialties such as: Trout, of which there is a fish farm “La Jara” that has been raising trout for more than 25 years in the waters of the Turrite stream in Gallicano. It uses spring water and concrete tanks that are kept constantly clean to ensure the best quality of fish.

And mushrooms, especially porcini mushrooms, beloved by villagers who eagerly await their emergence so they can enjoy them in the village restaurants.
