historical documents testify the presence of a Presidium Ostrogothic (Clausurae Augustanae) in the area already in the VI century. The fort is often appointed in high medieval chronicles of famous travelers. In 1034 the fortress was defined inexpugnabile oppidum. In 1661 Carlo Emanuele II, Duke of Savoy, vi did install the Presidium of the duchy in the valley. Fell into disuse at the end of the nineteenth century, the fort was then used as a military prison and then until 1975 a powder keg of the Italian Army.
On the fortress that overlooks the village of Bard, stands the imposing, Fort Bard, was built around the year 1000, on prior constructions, the foundations of which were carried out by the Romans. Cleverly refurbished, is today a Polo Museale cultural and of all respect. With its Museums: “The Alps Museum”, “The Alps of Children”, “the fort prisons”, “The Ferdinand, Museum of fortifications and frontiers”. “The Ferdinand, Museum of frontiers”, the temporary exhibitions and numerous events, attracts thousands of visitors each year. The fort is also home to three permanent routes: the Museum of the Alps, the alps of the Boys and the prisons.
In March 2014 at the fort of Bard scenes were filmed The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
