Abbey of St. Ellero

The Abbey of St. Ellero in Galeata è a must-see destination for lovers of history and architecture. Probably founded in the late 5th or early 6th century by Ellero, according to legend, the abbey stands majestically in the upper Bidente Valley.

Over the centuries, due to historical events and earthquakes, the building has undergone several construction phases and numerous restorations, resulting in a unique architectural complex. The interior of the abbey features a single nave culminating in a raised chancel and a rectilinear apse.

The most fascinating part of the abbey è undoubtedly the crypt, where a religious ritual related to the magic of stone takes place.

Here è preserved is the sarcophagus of the saint, dating from the late 8th or early 9th century, embellished with crosses inside niches. Also not to be missed is the Romanesque facade, dating from the 11th-12th centuries, made of sandstone blocks and dominated by the portal with twin columns decorated with capitals depicting monks and sirens.

St. Ellero Abbey represents a cultural and historical treasure that deserves to be discovered and admired. Do not miss the opportunity to visit this fascinating place, which holds ancient secrets and offers a deep connection with the past.
