To the Shrine of Bastìa of Isola della Scala, finished in 1126, is venerated a wooden statue of the Madonna that popular tradition miraculous. It rises on a rise in the west of the main town in the valley of the River Tartaro, considered an ancient bastion on the top of which there was a probable fortification (from here the name Bastìa, from “bastita”, i.e. shelter, a construction of 400 A.D. made by rural populations of the place).
This supposition has given rise to the legend (handed down until a few years ago) for which the Church, rising on the ruins of this fortification was sotterraneamente connected to the ossuary of the cemetery to the south of the village and that these cellars were used in time for hiding during the wars or hide bodies and treasures.
