Norman Tower at Altomonte

The tower takes its name from the Pallotta, lords of Brahalla (ancient toponym of Altomonte), to which it belonged between the second half of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century. The building located on the west side of the castle of Altomonte is closed on three sides by buildings that surround it at the bottom.A classic example of a Norman Tower, with a quadrilateral plan, probably built in the eleventh century, it is part of the fortification system created by the Normans to defend the Calabrian coasts. The structure of the height of about 13 meters, has a basement room once used as a cistern in which the rainwater was conveyed. While on the 2nd and 3rd level features masonry benches allowed to sit near the windows and enjoy the beautiful scenery or spot the enemy. The construction ends with the particular walkway on the roof, which allows you to have a 360 ° view, ranging from the mountains of Pollino, to the Piana di Sibari with its Ionian Sea, from the Italian Albanian countries (Lungro, Acquaformosa, Firmo) up to mountains of Fagnano in the direction of the Tyrrhenian Sea.Over the centuries the building underwent several renovations, among which the splendid mullioned window of the same period of the construction of the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, probably added to the defensive structure by Count Filippo Sangineto, stands out on the 2nd level.Restored in 1991, it is an exhibition venue for contemporary art exhibitions.
