The Piombino lighthouse, also known as Rocchetta lighthouse, is a maritime lighthouse of the Piombino canal located in Piazza Bovio, in Piombino.
The structure consists of a neo-Gothic tower with a square section, with an internal gallery and stone-clad wall structures. The entrance door, preceded by steps, is surmounted by a pointed arch. In the upper part of the tower protrudes a crowning that rests on pointed arches, which form the base of the summit battlements that delimit the terrace on which the metal lantern is placed.
The lighthouse was built in the place where the Rocchetta di Piombino stood, a historic defensive fortification that was demolished during the 1920s to make way for the current square that opens towards the sea. In the place where the southern bastion of the fortification was divided, the tower was built on which the lighthouse was activated to illuminate the southern coast of the promontory of Piombino, in the stretch near the Porto Antico di Piombino.
From the second half of the twentieth century onwards, the only monumental lighthouse still in operation in Piombino remained, following the definitive disposal of the Piombino traffic light.
