St. Michael’s Church

The church, which from the 8th to the 12th century, was the original seat of the parish of San Candido and was responsible for much of eastern Pusteria. It was also the main church to take care of souls in the Mark of Innichen and until 1803 was dependent on the Lordship of Freising.
Originally built in the Romanesque style in 1735, this church è was later transformed into a Baroque masterpiece and is an important testimony to sacred architecture in the Tyrol. The paintings inside, made around 1760, are the work of the brilliant Baroque painter Christoph Anton Mayr of Schwaz. The altars were built by altar master Josef Stauder of Innichen around 1850, and the paintings on the side altars are by Carl Jehle, while the beautiful high altarpiece è by Karl Blaas. The exterior with its west facade è a sight for sore eyes in the center of Innichen.
