Cornabusa Sanctuary

Nestled in a zone inaccessible, between trees, rocks, and in the background the jagged profile of the surrounding mountains, the sanctuary projects on a scenario that combines peace, sensory experience and prayer. This mystical place has its origin in the period of the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, between 1350 and 1440. To escape the violence some inhabitants of the area is hidden in a ‘horns BUSA’, which in local dialect means natural cavity. One of them carries with it the wooden statue of the Madonna that forgets however in the atrium of the cave when, escaped the danger, back to the country.

The cult of the Madonna della Grotta, only as a result of “Madonna della Cornabusa” is a later epoch, when a girl deaf and dumb, finished there while grazing sheep, discovers the statue and retrieves prodigiously voice and heard. The venerated statue has a height of eighty centimeters and was sculpted in a wood of the XV century. The mystical charm of the sanctuary is strengthened thanks to the light of the candles that reflects on the cave from which drips water. The surrounding panorama evokes a deep sense of meditation and reflection.

The refuge can be reached by car. From the parking lot the trail winds among the woods following the eight chapels dedicated to the Marian mysteries and the history of the little girl. Joints on the square in front of the cave is a tempietto closed by grating that preserves the statue. The place of worship itself is only open from Monday of the Angel until the end of summer.
