The Palazzo Ramirez di Montalvo è a charming castle located in the ancient village of Sassetta, along the fortification and behind the church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo. This historic structure, despite being built on earlier foundations, dates back to the 16th century when the Ramirez de Montalvo family obtained the fiefdom of the entire village.
The Montalvo family, a family of Spanish origin who moved to Florence in the retinue of Eleonora da Toledo, received honors and recognition for their loyalty to Cosimo I de’ Medici. Antonio Ramirez di Montalvo, one of Cosimo I’s most trusted courtiers, received a large Florentine palace and the fiefdom of Sassetta as his prize.

The Palace of Sassetta, later renovated in the 18th century, still preserves on its facade a large stone family coat of arms, a visible symbol of its illustrious past.
