Wool Museum at Scanno

The Museum of the wool of Scanno was built with stones of an ancient gate to the city that entered on a road that led to Rome. The exterior is in Romanesque style-of Abruzzo, in substantially octagonal canopy with a sloping average slope with rural tiles.

In the only exhibition hall there are objects that narrate the life of a shepherd, the preparation of cheeses, the outfitting of the houses, the work of the fields, the weaving and dyeing of the wool and the popular costume. In the exhibition are exposed tools, pantry, kitchen bedroom (with a bed made with leaves secce corn, the linens woven and dyed in Scanno and a container of coals used to heat the bed, locally called “monk”, on the headrest or headboard there were sacred images), processing of cheese (are exposed paioli, baskets said fiscelle locally, shapes and ladles) and of the wool and the cults, in addition to the permanent exhibition “everyday life in Scanno and in Valle del Sagittario” is renewed every year.

The museum is also a point of reference for scholars and volunteers who expose their research results that are studying the Abruzzi culture modern and contemporary. Every year here are presented the results of the activity of the “Center for Studies on the image of Abruzzo” and ducts systematic studies on fabrics, their production and coloring, the history of the typical costume of Scanno and working wood, fabric and metal.
