Schiavonea

Schiavonea, a hamlet of Corigliano, is a charming seaside village located on the Ionian coast, combining history, traditions and natural beauty. Its history is rooted in the past, with the construction of the Cupo Tower before 1583, erected to defend the area from pirate raids. Next to it was a warehouse, known as the “Taverna,” owned by the noble Sanseverino and Saluzzo families, testifying to the commercial importance of the area.

In 1648, a miraculous event marked a significant change in the life of the community: construction began on the Shrine of the Madonna of the Schiavonea, also known as the “Madonna of the Guide” or “Black Madonna” because of her dark face. This church, consecrated in 1665, became an important spiritual reference point, not only for residents but also for the faithful from afar. During the 19th century, the village was transformed with the construction of new brick houses, while the 1970s brought intense building growth, coinciding with work on the Corigliano port, which began in 1968. Today, Schiavonea is a lively center, which during the summer welcomes about 30,000 people, including residents and tourists, attracted by its beauty and traditions.

Religion plays a central role in Schiavonea’s culture. Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of the hamlet, is celebrated on August 5 with a striking procession at sea. Fishermen leave at sunset from the harbor, carrying the statue of the Madonna along the coast, creating an atmosphere of great spirituality and community.

The village is characterized by old fishermen’s cottages and narrow streets where you can still breathe the air of yesteryear. Here fishermen can be seen intent on repairing nets and motors, keeping centuries-old traditions alive. The local gastronomy is greatly influenced by the presence of the sea: fresh fish is the protagonist in restaurants and typical eateries. The “rosamarina,” a small sardine, is particularly renowned and is a signature dish of the local cuisine.

Schiavonea is also known for its marina, which offers a long and lively waterfront where residents and tourists meet for walks, water sports, and relaxation. During the summer, the promenade comes alive with nightclubs and events, making it a focal point for nightlife in the Piana di Sibari.

Thanks to its geographical location, Schiavonea is surrounded by the beauty of the Pollino and Sila Mountains and the scent of citrus fruits, especially the famous clementines. Its privileged location allows it to enjoy a mild climate throughout the year, making the village an ideal place for vacations in any season. In winter, it is possible to savor typical local seafood and mountain products, while summer invites you to dive into the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

Schiavonea is also an excellent starting point for visiting historically significant places, such as the excavations of Sibari, the Ducal Castle of Corigliano, and the Museum of Rossano, which houses the precious Codex Purpureus. The combination of history, culture, natural beauty and traditions makes Schiavonea a must-visit destination for those wishing to discover the wonders of Calabria.
