Roman Amphitheater

built between the I and II century A.D., the first excavation at the Roman Amphitheater of Venosa was commissioned by the Bourbons in the 19th century. Were found a series of bronzes, coins, terracotta but, for abandonment, the ruins were risotterrati. Only in 1935 was fully returned to light.

The roman amphitheater has an elliptical shape, on three floors, part built out of the ground and in part made by cutting at the terraces of the medium in which it rises. The major axis measure 70 m while the minor axis 40 m. It is believed that this structure would be accepted about ten thousand spectators. The lowest level is that of the arena, where is located the terrace of the “podium” for celebrities. There are two other levels, supported by three concentric ambulatories: the first level said “ima cavea”, the second “media cavea” and the third “summa cavea”.
